Author guidelines for MusPed:Research

MusPed:Research is a scholarly series published by NOASP/Cappelen Damm Akademisk. Once a project has been evaluated, the author(s) will also be informed of the estimated publication fee. The publication fee is to be paid by the author/publishing fund at the institution the author is affiliated with.

All texts to be included in an edition of the series must be prepared in accordance with the two sets of instructions, as described below: 1) instructions for preparation and submission of a project proposal, sent in the initial phase of the project, and 2) instructions for preparation and submission of the finished manuscript. Authors and editors must follow these guidelines carefully.

1. Submitting a proposal

Project descriptions are to be sent as attachments to an email to the editor. Project descriptions shall be identifiable, that is, not anonymized. MusPed:Research publishes anthologies comprised of 6-12 chapters and monographs of up to 300 pages.

The following must be included in the project description:

  • Title
  • Project description
  • Positioning within/Related to field(s) of research: In what way will the publication present new knowledge?
  • Who is contributing to the publication? List all authors’ names, positions and institutional affiliations, and email addresses
  • Structure and outline
  • For anthologies: Author guidelines with specified information/requirements on content and format. The general guidelines given in pt. 2 (under), might be used as a template, but needs specification.
  • Has any of the content been previously published? If so, where?
  • Has the manuscript, if completed, already been peer-reviewed? If so, describe the process followed
  • Is the publication based on a Ph.D dissertation? If so, describe how the manuscript has been/will be revised and/or edited. Attach the jury’s evaluation and the name of the advisor
  • Time plan with fixed dates for delivery of the first draft and the completed manuscript
  • Number of manuscript pages
  • Number of photographs/illustrations. Number of figures/tables. Use of net-based resources/videos. Important: the author is responsible for clearing necessary rights attendant to the use of all visual material and for obtaining high-resolution files of the material
  • Is anyone else’s work included in the publication? If so, please elaborate.
  • Has any fieldwork done in connection with research projects associated with the publication been cleared and, where necessary, approved by NSD (the Norwegian Centre for Research Data)?


2. Submitting a finished manuscript


The series publishes manuscripts in the Scandinavian languages and English. Anthologies comprised of articles in different languages are permitted. 


All anthology chapters and monographs must have an abstract of 150–250 words. The abstract should introduce the subject matter of the text, describe what has been researched and how, and state for whom/what the text has relevance. The abstract should be in italics and placed on the first page between the title and the keywords. If the article is written in one of the Scandinavian languages, the author must include a translated English version of the abstract and the title. 


The manuscript must include c. 4-6 keywords, placed after the abstract and before the introduction. If the article is written in one of the Scandinavian languages, keywords should be in English.

Length and format

Anthology chapters may be between 6-9,000 words in length (specify for each anthology gudielines). Text should be written in Calibri, 11 pt. font size, and 2 line-spacing. The left and right margins should be 2.5 cm wide, and text should be justified (with straight margins on each side). Use a hard return and indent with the tab key to indicate a new paragraph. Monographs may be up to 300 pages (in total, including references, etc.) and must also be formatted as described above.

Titles and headings

Titles and headings should be simple, straightforward and refer to the main topic. Use no more than three heading levels. Sub-heading level 1 should be centered, in bold and Title Case, level 2 left-aligned, bold and Title Case and level 3 left-aligned, bold, Title case and italics. Figures, photos, illustrations, audio and video clips

Other non-textual content (such as figures, photos, illustrations, audio and video clips) should be placed in the manuscript precisely where the author would like it to be in relation to the text. All non-textual content should be appropriately numbered and have an explanatory title. These titles are to be in Calibri, 11 pt., and placed above the figure, photo or other content. For all other content included in the manuscript, the author must submit, along with the manuscript, written confirmation that rights necessary for use of the material have been secured.  


Footnotes are permitted, but their use should be kept to a minimum.


Short, direct citations should be in quotation marks, as in these examples: “Music is found in all the situations of life, from everyday activities to the great rituals of chiefs and kings,” notes Christopher Small (1980, p. 50). Or: «Music is found in all the situations of life, from everyday activities to the great rituals of chiefs and kings.» (Small, 1980, p. 50). A longer direct citation– over 40 words – should be in an indented paragraph offset from the text, with a blank line above and below, and without quotation marks.

With regard to in-text citations and reference lists, MusPed:Research follows the APA7 style:

Name and affiliation

The author’s name, institutional affiliation and email address should be placed at the very end of the article.

Peer review

MusPed:Research is a series of scientific publications. As such, editorial processes will be in keeping with standard practices for scientific publishing, and all potential publications will be subject to peer review. The responsible editor will send an anonymized version of the manuscript under consideration to at least one independent referee. If the referee(s) recommends publication, the author will be sent the referee’s(s’) specific comments and afforded the opportunity to revise the text accordingly, prior to publication. After the final manuscript is typeset, the author will have the opportunity to proofread the first proof. All authors will receive a PDF file of the print-ready version of their own article.


  • The originality of the manuscript and whether it contributes new knowledge to the field of music pedagogy.
  • The current interest, value and relevance of the manuscript.
  • The logical coherence and structure of the manuscript, and whether the research topic, theory, methodology, results and interpretations are clearly presented and well communicated.
  • Whether the research project upon which the manuscript is based is sound, and the research presented in the manuscript (data, methodology, interpretations) is reliable, objective and transparent.
  • Whether the argumentation is clear and concise, and the conclusions drawn are convincing and well anchored, theoretically, empirically and practically.
  • That supplementary material such as figures, tables, audio or video clips and net-based resources, are understandable and serve their purpose.
  • Whether the manuscript has an obvious and distinct conclusion.
  • Whether the title, headings and keywords are descriptive of the content.
  • Whether the abstract is sufficiently informative and descriptive of the content.
  • That references provided in both the text and reference list are sufficient and complete.
